DOCUMENTS:
1) THE FULL TEXT OF THE PETITION:
PETITION FOR THE REPEAL OF THE LAW GAYSSOT
VINCENT AND THE RELEASE OF Reynouard
Law Gayssot, passed in July 1990, prohibits "making contest (...) the existence of one or more crimes against humanity as defined by Article 6 of the Statute of the International Military Tribunal [said Nuremberg ] annexed to the London Agreement of 8 August 1945. "
Today, twenty years later, this law allows French courts to imprison the French Reynouard Vincent, father of eight children, to have written a 16-page booklet entitled "Holocaust? What you seek ... , "In which he challenges the existence of gas chambers in Nazi concentration camps. It is by virtue of a conviction by the court in 2007 in Saverne (Bas-Rhin) a year in prison, confirmed the following year by the Court of Appeal of Colmar - which also imposes a fine and damages for a total of 60,000 euros - that Mr. Reynouard is locked in the prison of Valenciennes (Nord).
Political positions of Mr. Reynouard, who claims national-socialist, who defends a form of racism and a radical version of traditional Catholicism, merely asking the question more clearly the freedom of expression at the level of its principles.
One of the achievements of the French Revolution is precisely this freedom of expression. If it is limited in cases of insults, slander, pornography, attacks on the security of the state or its symbols, incentives immediate actions illegal or false alarms, it has never been in republican France, for scientific opinions, historical, philosophical or religious, whatever they were. Can legally think and say what you like about the plans of Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Mussolini and even Hitler, but on condition to avoid talking about what specifically falls within the scope of the Gayssot. The same legal freedom exists as regards the events in Bosnia in the 1990s, Rwanda in 1994 or Armenia in 1915 and, of course, for all the wars and horrors past or present, apart what has been tried at Nuremberg.
is why this law is an absolute aberration from the principles of our law. We believe that the law should not intervene in the definition of historical truth in a free state, this function is that of historians. It is important, in the words of John Stuart Mill, to let the truth and falsehood compete on equal terms, without a law threatens to imprison a party.
The petitioners therefore call Repeal the fastest possible law Gayssot and, provisionally, the non-implementation, as well as the release of Mr. Reynouard.
It is not, for the signatories of this petition, support the ideas of Vincent Reynouard but to defend his right to express and thereby to defend a fundamental principle of the French Republic.
Petition launched at the initiative of Paul-Eric Blanrue, August 6, 2010.

2) COMPLETE THE DECLARATION OF NOAM CHOMSKY:
French:
Reynouard I learn that Vincent was convicted and jailed in the name of the law Gayssot and a petition is circulating to protest against these measures. I know nothing about Mr. Reynouard, but I consider the law as completely illegitimate Gayssot and inconsistent with the principles of a free society, as they have been understood since the Enlightenment. This law has the effect of granting the State the right to determine historical truth and punish those who deviate from its decrees, This is a principle which reminds us of the darkest days of Stalinism and Nazism. If the justification of the Gayssot Act is to prohibit "abhorrent views" or enforce the law "not afraid to live in a climate " [1] of prejudice and racism, then it should be obvious that if such laws are applied impartially, they would make illegal much of the spoken publicly about that, even if they can consider as despicable, should certainly be allowed in a free society and, in fact, are, without even that does not raise any questions.
Therefore, I wish to express my support for the petition against the application of this law in the case of Mr. Reynouard (or in any other case).
September 5, 2010.
English:
I Understand That Vincent Reynouard has been condemned and jailed under the Gayssot law, and that a petition is being circulated in protest against these actions. I know nothing about Mr. Reynouard, but regard the Gayssot law as entirely illegitimate, inconsistent with the basic principles of a free society as these have been understood since the Enlightenment. The law in effect grants the state the right to determine historical truth and to punish departure from its edicts, a principle reminiscent of the dark days of Stalinism and Nazism. If the justification of the Gayssot law is to ban "horrendous views", or to protect the right to "live free from fear of an atmosphere" of prejudice and racism, then it should be obvious that, if such laws were applied impartially, they would criminalize a vast range of public discourse, which, however despicable one may find it, should certainly be permitted in a free society, and indeed is, with no question being raised.
Accordingly, I would like to register my support for the petition protesting the application of this law in this (or any) case.

The petition demanding the repeal of the Gayssot Act and the release from prison of the revisionist Vincent Reynouard , launched on the Internet on August 6 at the initiative of the historian Paul-Eric Blanrue (http://abrogeonslaloigayssot.blogspot.com), has now received some noteworthy support indeed with the signature of the American linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky .
" I understand that Vincent Reynouard has been condemned and jailed under the Gayssot law, and that a petition is being circulated in protest against these actions ," wrote the tireless defender of freedom of expression in a statement of September 5. Mr Chomsky had been in France last spring for a conference at the College de France and various other events.
" I know nothing about Mr. Reynouard, but regard the Gayssot law as entirely illegitimate, inconsistent with the basic principles of a free society as these have been understood since the Enlightenment ," he added.
Noam Chomsky pointed out that " this law in effect grants the state the right to determine historical truth and to punish departure from its edicts, a principle reminiscent of the dark days of Stalinism and Nazism ."
Mr Chomsky ended his statement by lending his support to French historian Blanrue’s initiative: " Accordingly, I would like to register my support for the petition protesting the application of this law in this (or any) case ”.
Passed on July 13, 1990, the Gayssot Act forbids the "disputing (...) of the existence of one or more crimes against humanity as defined by Article 6 of the charter of the international military tribunal [known as that of Nuremberg], annexed to the London Agreement of 8 August 1945. "
In 2007 the revisionist Vincent Reynouard, father of eight children, was sentenced by a court in Saverne (Alsace) to a year in prison for having written a 16-page pamphlet entitled Holocauste ? Ce que l’on vous cache… (Holocaust? Here’s what’s being hidden from you…) The following year that sentence was upheld by the Court of Appeal in Colmar, which also imposed a fine and damages amounting to a total of 60,000 euros. Mr Reynouard is currently detained in the prison of Valenciennes.
Amongst the first of those to sign the petition, who, let us recall, do not, in so doing, support Vincent Reynouard’s ideas but merely defend his right to express them, are:
Paul-Eric Blanrue, historian (France / Italy) ; Jean Bricmont , professor of physics at the Université Catholique of Louvain, essayist (Brussels); Dieudonné M'Bala M'Bala , humorist (Paris); John Bastardi Daumont , barrister (Nice); Chris Laffaille , writer, journalist, former deputy editor of Paris Match (Paris); Albert Salon , doctor of letters, former ambassador ; Tristan Edern Vaquette , artist (Paris); Jean-Guy Allard , journalist, writer (Havana); Patrick Berger , doctor of physics, Université de Paris-Est-Créteil, president of the Circle Zététique (Paris); Marco Pietteur , editor (Belgium); Bruno Roy-Henry , historian, author of Napoleon: l’Enigme de l’Exumé de Sainte-Hélène (Paris); Gérard Lecha , sociologist and writer, columnist for Le Libertaire under the nickname "Père Chat” (Paris); Jean-Claude Manifacier , professor, Université des Sciences de Montpellier (France); Alain Marliac , honorary research director at the IRD, doctor of prehistory ; Max Cabantous , lecturer emeritus, Université de Montpellier III (France); Michel Bizouard , honorary professor at the Université de Bourgogne (Jambles, France); Laurent James , writer (Marseille); Rashid Shahin , writer and journalist (Bethlehem, Palestine); Hiyam Haddad , university lecturer (London); Géraldine Hilaire , actress (Chilly-Mazarin, France); Daniel McGowan , professor emeritus, Hobart and William Smith Colleges (Geneva, New York); Syed A R Zaidi , professor of philosophy (ret’d), University of Delhi (India); Dr Hamdy Abdo Elhinnawy , economist (Egypt); George Salzman , professor emeritus of theoretical physics, University of Massachusetts (Boston); Caroline Henaff , journalist (Paris); Diana Johnstone , journalist (Paris); Robyn Johannes , president of the Union of Atheists (Brussels); Marc Laudelout , director of the Bulletin Célinien (Belgium); Jean-Yves Le Gallou , former MEP, director of the Fondation Polémia (Paris); Franck Abed , writer, essayist (Val d'Oise, France); Patrice Authier , jazz pianist (Paris); Johan Livernet , journalist, author (Toulon, France); Koffi Cadjehoun , writer (Nancy),...

The famous Italian tenor Joe Fallisi us that he wishes to give his signature to the petition. We address these words:
"Reynouard Vincent does not believe in the Nazi gas chambers. We do not understand why he did not have the right. I, for example, on this specific fact I do not agree with him, my historical research leads me to conclude that the Nazis used (also) the means of extermination. But never, ever would I do it with the idea of him put in jail and / or attempt to gag him and to punish for such a thing. (...) Long live freedom of inquiry and expression. For all! "
